Went down to the local Chrysler dealer to look at a Jeep Liberty. It
had a lot of options, listed for around $29 K. With the employees price
and other incentitives the price went down to about $23 K. The vehicle
was a "demonstrator" and had 6,400 miles on it. I inquired as to where
is the money taken off because the vehicle is a used car?
You ready for this? They told me that since the car was never titled,
it is technically a new vehicle and is being sold as one.

They will extend the warranty on it for what miles, that is on it, true
since it has never been titled, it is considered new.

OK, but how does that effect non warranted items? How can they take
6400 miles of wear and tear off of the tires, the brake pads, etc.??

  5. The dealer is feeding you a line. Yes, they will extend the warranty. But
    the
long and short of it is that if you can buy a brand new Jeep Liberty from
    them
for the same price (with incentives) that has 3-5 miles on it vs this 6400
    miles
vehicle, for the same price, then they are NOT going to get full sticker
    price
on this vehicle unless they come across a complete moron.

You didn't say if this is a year 2004 Jeep or a year 2005. If it's a year
    2005 then
from the dealers point of view, they don't have much incentive
right now to drop the price. The dealer is going to be selling 2005 models
    for
at least another year. During that time they will of course need a 2005 to
    demo.
So if they sell this to you they are just going to replace it with another
    Liberty that
is going to accumulate another 10,000 miles of "demo" over the next year.
    They
might as well keep this one.

Now, if this is a year 2004 model then you have some leverage because they
    obviously
want to get rid of it. In that case you start haggling just as you would
    for a used car.
Sure technically this might be a new vehicle but it's last years model with
    6400 miles
on it, they aren't going to get full sticker. And they know that. They
    just don't know
if you know it and they are going to assume you don't until you say "yah
    right, now
quit joking around and let's start discussing some realistic pricing"

no they don't! warranty starts at 0 miles and goes from there period and i do
believe that is against the law to sell that as new, file a complaint with
the state attorneys office agaisnt the dealer esp. if they give it to u in
    writting

Wrong! Warranty starts for a customer when the vehicle is first reported to
Chrysler. That is why there is a field for mileage, when a dealer enters
sales detail. Also, it is legally a New vehicle if it has not been
registered. However, to circumvent this, it is only allowed to have so many
miles as a demonstrator, before it has to be registered, and become a used
vehicle. It depends on what State, or Province for the mileage of a
    demonstrator.

GENERALLY, if the "demo" has only been run on dealer plates, it is
still sold as a new vehicle. If it has been a "company car" - ie
plated for personal use of a salesman or other dealer staff, it is
sold as a "demo" and is technically a used car.
Here in Ontario, with 6400 miles (over 10,000Km) it would most likely
have been a plated vehicle and be sold as a demo. In many areas, even
salesman's demos are run on plates issued to the dealership - not
specified or legally attached to any particular vehicle - so a vehicle
COULD have significant mileage and still be unregistered, and therefor
    "new".

My Dad mought a "demo" from a local AMC dealer and had a few problems
that proved the car had significantly more mileage than the dealer was
admitting to. Ends up it was a "fleet" car from Budget Rent-A-Car.

Some serious brown stuff hit the fan in Kitchener that day - and the
    dealer lost his franchise.

They can't. That is where your negotiation skills come in...

  10. Select a different vehicle with less than 20 miles.

  11. You are a fool if you fall for that line. It is not new. It is used.

Consider it a demo and expect a significant price reduction from actual
selling prices of a new vehicle.
As has been said here shop around, you may equal their price on a NEW
    vehicle.
When I hear crap during the negotiation phase I take my business
elsewhere. Fortunately we have multiple dealers here.
Just imagine what they would be like if you have a serious problem with
    the vehicle.

By the way do you like the location of the gasoline tank on the Liberty.
I didn't on the one I saw when it came out. Just behind the rear bumper!
