Strange radio problem

I've got a strange one. A few weeks ago my 96 GV radio starting having
a lot of static in it on occasion. I didn't pay enough attention to it
to make a correlation, but my wife and teenage daughter found that it
only occurs when in the defrost mode. As soon as the dial hits the
point where the defrost starts to blend in, the radio gets very staticy
and stays that way as long as the dial is in one of the 5 or so detents
    that turn on the defroster.

My first thought was that it was something in the compressor circuit,
but if I run the compressor in normal AC mode, the radio is fine.
Anyone experience this sort of problem before? I haven't tried to get
up under the dash, but I'm wonder if there is a duct damper that is
moving and rubbing against the antenna cable or some such thing.
