Speaking of Obama's Canadian visit...................

Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by Pete E. Kruzer, Feb 21, 2009.

  1. ......Why did the news media in the states refer to it as Obama's first
visit to a foreign country, but never refer to a vehicle manufactured
in Canada bearing a US company name plate as being manufactured in a
    foreign country??

.....are you sure about that? Ever hear of General Motors of Canada,
Ltd., Chrysler Canada Inc., or Ford Motor Company of Canada, Ltd.?

  3. Of course I've heard of them. But if you saw a "Made in Canada" as the
    country of origin,
the dealer doesn't say it was made in a foreign country. They'd say it
    was made in Canada.

BTW, the media is now referring to Obama's trip to Canada as his first
    "overseas" trip as President.

Obama's trip this week WAS his first trip to a foreign country as
    president.
Vehicles manufactured in Canada DON'T bear a US company "name
    plate"....whatever that is.
BTW, since when ARE the media the paragons of correct speak...or is
    that your point?

  11. A chap I know in a Toronto company once told me that there's USA + Southern
    Ontario... and then there's Canada...

As a foreign (European)-born guy he could take a dispassionate view...

The reality is that there is

    - USA + SW-Ontario
    - Toronto
    - The Rest of Canada

This thread is confusing me and it's all Kruzer's fault. BTW, it's
Tranna.......and Detroit is just a northern suburb of Windsor.....

  16. Oh, it must depend on the area of the city, as I was told it's Tronna.

Same offer I made to MoPar Man: I am happy to continue the debate over a
Crown Royal or three, mixed in with
    a bit of Maker's Mark...

    Tranna is the Michigan pronunciation.

I'm speculating that during conversation, that Torontonian's talking
among themselves would substitute "Toronto" with "the city", as in "Oh,
I didn't know that Joe lived in the city", or "yea, the best strip clubs
are outside the city". I believe that this substitution happens in most
major cities (ie NYC, San Francisco, etc).

For conversations that happen outside the city, the most common slang is
simply "T.O." - pronounced as "Tee Oh". As in "I'm flying out of TO
tommorrow." A much less common term (used more frequently 10+ years
    ago) is "the big smoke".

Media broadcasts (most notably sports coverage) infrequently refers to
Toronto as "Hog Town". News coverage frequently substitutes "GTA" for
Toronto (Greater Toronto Area). As in "A cold weather advisory has been
posted for the GTA tonight". A less frequent substitution is "the 416"
(the telephone area code for the core area of Toronto).

  19. And the correct term is "Canada Goose" not "Canadian Goose."

Don't have any Maker's Mark, but I always keep a bottle or three of the
Royal or VO on hand, as well as CC (distilled in my home town, where you
can always smell the hops on Riverside drive). Rye and ginger for me,
    usually.

I haven't been to Europe since the summer of '06, and haven't been to
the UK since '04 or '05. Probably not much chance of a drink - not even
at Heathrow (I do everything I can to NOT transit through that airport
    when flying to europe).

I'll raise a glass to you tonight to ease the pain of digging out of
    yesterday's snow storm.

Then I'll raise another one to Chrysler and it's bail-out.
