Replacement of front wheel bearing

Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by Colindownunder, Jul 29, 2004.

  1. I am up for a replacment front wheel bearing which, in Oz, is about six
times more expensive than for equivalent vehicles. Partly because the
bearing is not sold as a separate part but comes with a whole hub. (Also
partly because Chrysler screw us on parts in Oz.)

Does anyone know if it is possible to remove the bearing from the hub with a
view to replacing the bearing with a generic bearing atr a fraction f the
price? Or is it annealed in or otherwise fitted to make removal and
    replacement impossible?

As I expect the opposite side will also go soon (after less than 100,000
miles of town driving), I am keen to do it for reasonable price. I am still
smarting from the replacment $7,000 gearbox I put inj last week.

I would say the bearing is definitely removable as remanufactured front
hub bearings are available for most models. (What exactly is the model
    anyway?) The questions are;
    1) can "you and I" can remove the bearings without damaging the hub?
    2) do we have access to replacement parts to fit back into the hub -
    bearing(s) & seal(s)?
    3) can we reassemble the hub without damaging it?

A hydraulic press and the proper information would probably take care of
#1 & #3 so that leaves question #2. Know anyone in the bearing supply
    business?
