When I hit a bump, there's a rattle, more like a bang or thumping song
coming from underneath the rear of the car.
Any idea what this might be as far as something common happening in
this car? It's not due for an oil change, so I won't have access to a
    lift until then.

More then likely the rear stabilizer links are worn out causing the noise.

    Thanks Glenn,
Is this a DIY project, or should I
    take it to a garage?

If you find out thats the problem, yes you can do it yourself on the ground

Also pick up a pair of urethane bushings for the sway bar. Also a
do-it-yourself job. Big improvement, and alone can be causing the noise
problem. Chrysler got cheap with these sway bar parts, both front and rear.
