Push for Mandatory Service Logs

I visited a used car lot and not one of the cars for sale had a documented
mechanical service record. It seems a while back, servicemen would apply a
sticker to the door jamb which minimally documented service by date and
    mileage.

My proposal is a formal log need be kept in the vehicle, to be displayed if
asked for by police officers at routine stops. It would also be inspected
in the event of accident. Obviously a poorly maintained vehicle is a
public roadway hazard, a cause of serious accidents.

A beneficial byproduct of logging service would be to improve used car
worth. Any vehicle that isn't serviced according to schedule has its life
shortened, so I wouldn't pay much for a vehicle that doesn't have a
    documented record.

As for do-it-yourself service, that will become a thing of the past. Only
professionals would be allowed to document log books for obvious reasons to
prevent forgeries. Besides, the modern vehicle cannot be serviced by
amateurs; its ineffective and possibly dangerous. Even oil changes need be
done by licensed and insured shops. It is not a hardship to legislate
professional service because Walmart does service efficiently and cheaply
while you shop and they even do a free safety inspection with every oil
    change!

  2. Or at safety roadblocks put up randomly to check for DUI drivers and
unsafe cars... so as to swell revenue through local courts.
Not enough Police State for old Nomen... he longs for the old days in the
    old country.
I think Accident reports would not support that statement. Even when
considering the percentage of older cars on the road.
Prove that. Your assumption is NOT supported by any facts... except from
those whose business it is to provide those services.
Then dont, you weenie... MAny private sellers have complete service
    records.
How about LOOKING at the car, and having a Tech inspect it,, far more
revealing than service records. You obviously dont know shit about cars,
so you assume we dont, either.
    Oh, goodie!
And why is that? Note the case above where the shop didnt install enough
    tranny fluid.
Oh, THAT takes the cake... They dont even know how to install wheels the
right direction.. even after being warned specifically.

Nomen Nescio must be his real name because he reminds me of the type I've
met (not all) whose parents emigrated from Eastern Europe and now regret
it because they actually have to make decisions.

Go drink some more socialist KoolAid, you twit!

Why not, professionals do not teach people to drive those cars? The people
that teach other people to drive are amateurs that do not know how to drive,
making most other drivers a public roadway hazard as well LOL

  4. Not feasible.

I do all my own repairs.. Even complex CANBUS diagnostics/scanning, trace &
    repair.

I've had too many "professionals" screw up my cars!

Had a coolant leak: dealer suggested that the water pump was bad, needed to
be removed/resealed.. turned out to be a bad hose (repaired myself),
ignition module failed... ok, that is what the dealer said, turned out to be
a fuel pump relay.. diagnosed properly after the 2nd tow. (had no time to
spare to repair, and relied on the dealer.)

thanks.. but you won't get anywhere with that. I bet Raplh Nader has
wrenched a few cars as well.

Professional service at Walmart. Now there's an oxymoron for the ages.
I looked hard, but I don't see any oxy in Nomen.

I think Nomen has a disease. Cranial rectalitis. He should visit a
doctor, I suspect he will prescribe a plexiglass stomach. So he can see
where he is going with his head up his a**.

Oh boy won't you be happy when OBD-III is instituted... especially when
you get the ticket in the mail from when your engine light was on while
driving through an EZ-PASS toll... yup.

This guy needs needs quality time with a shrink!! His rantings in
other groups are a sight to behold, but I don't have time for this
nonsense. It proves once again all crazies are not institutionalized.

Just occurred to me that he probably protests against the Patriot act and
Exactly... his kind knows everything about how ***EVERYONE ELSE***
should be regulated in conducting their lives. Typical liberal BS.
The same ones out in CALIFORNIA who are working to shove OBD-III up
    everyone's ass.

  15. To carry that line of hypocrisy on... Years ago, I tried to point out to
some of my liberal friends the law allowing the cops to confiscate your car
if you were to let a friend drive it and he was pulled over while
possessing some weed in his pocket and was met with silence.

Whether they were shocked at my outrage considering I'm conservative, or
what... I dunno. Maybe they thought it was a small thing cause it never
    happened to them.
Never happened to me, either but I could see where it was going.

I presume YOU believe your post has merit, and some of it may actually
    have some good sense.

However, as with the majority of the others who responded, find
home-plate, and get out of left-field. :sunglasse The majority of
modern cars can still be dealt with for many maintenance and repair
issues, by anyone with tools, a manual, and some common sense approach.

Why in hell would I go to Wal-dip to change an oil filter or air
filter??????? I'll keep the money for the time I would have to put in
instead. What tripe you propose essentially states it could become
illegal for a guy to change his own flat tire on the side of the road,
without "pro" documentation. Sheesh, stay with something you have some
true understanding of, although you do provide a good source of humor.

And, not wanting to sound too rough on you, you have the same right to
voice your opinion as any of the rest of the guys around. Just be
ready to be called to task for them.
