Here's a new one for you.

I have a 1984 Laser XE 2.2 Turbo. It only overheats on the first start
up after it has cooled down. I drive for about 5 miles it starts to
overheat, I pull over, shut it off for 20 or 30 seconds then start it up
and it never gives another problem.

I have replaced the thermostat twice and the rad cap. Any suggestions?

    Thanks
    Scott

  2. Need more info. Is it *actually* overheating (coolant boiling over) or is
it just *indicating* an overheat on the gauge?

Have you bled the cooling system thoroughly to purge the air?

I'm not a mechanic, but I've heard of this being corrected by proper
    bleeding of cooling system.

    Thanks for the reply;

I pull over before it actually boils over. The engine is really hot,
the gauge is in the red. after I shut it down for 20 seconds and
restart it the gauge is in the red but returns to normal within a
minute. I have never bled the cooling system... How would air get into
the system prior to any servicing being done?

It was suggested the head gasket was leaking, I had thought that might
be the case as the 2.2's were prone to needing replaced.
