Overcharging Battery

    The 60 amp alternator I got from rockauto I installed in my '65 New Yorker. It is putting out 18 volts and boiling my battery. I believe it has an internal voltage regulator. Would installing a 50 amp alternator solve my problem or is there some kind of external voltage regulator I can install?
    Another alternator would cost another $80.
