Oldsmobile joins Plymouth: RIP

Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by Daniel J. Stern, Apr 28, 2004.

  1. Nope, it's artificially expensive (by deliberate punitive taxes) everywhere
    else.
Not on net (that is, a lot more money in gas taxes and car registration
fees get diverted to non-road uses than non-driver taxes to road use). In
particular, "public" transportation is over 80% subsidized, nearly all by
    taxes on auto drivers.
absolutely rightful, because no one has any business saying what another
person "needs" if that person is paying his own bills, and all drivers do.

    Case dismissed.

Oh yes! You mean like John Kerry, Jesse Jackson, Bill Clinton, Hillary
Clinton, Barabra Streisand (actually not an SUV - she actually goes
shopping in a motor coach so she "doesn't have to use public restrooms),
and countless other liberals with money. I see exactly what you mean
about the elitist attitude of SUV owners.

The customer was and is the US taxpayer. "One" of the motivations was to
provide a road system the military could use to move troops and equipment
quickly, which was a big deal in the 50's when the Soviets were in full
expansion mode and Nikita was (later) slapping his shoe on the UN podium
    saying "We will bury you!".

As it is, the interstate system was one of the greatest investments our tax
dollars ever made. More wealth was created as a result of it than was ever
    spent building it.

Pintos... Either you're an ancient fart who carries a grudge for decades, or
you're digging through the corporate trash trying to make some strange point
about Ford that could also be made about anyone else who's ever built an
    automobile...

    I think the former.

Hey, Dan, at lunchtime I'll step outside my door and fly the fickle finger
of fate at the Glass House for you. Gladly, and free of charge.

No, I mean common, ordinary people who post in this (and other) news
groups. If you haven't seen it, you haven't done much reading in

  9. The fumes penetrate the diesel vehicle too. Particularly if it's in
    traffic.

  10. Oh, ha ha, get with the times, let bygones be bygones...it was only just
people burnt alive in their own cars, and besides it was in the past, so
who worries about these things? Aside from ancient farts and suchlike, I
    mean.

If I'm an ancient fart at 28, that would make you, by my estimate, about
    12 years old.

Why not? From what I hear the old AMC blocks are real stout, able to
handle massive amounts of turbocharging etc...

If you're only 28 then you don't know a damn thing about a pinto. Just
because a few idiots burned themselves up in one doesn't mean it's the cars
fault anymore than the recent tire ordeal with the explorers was the tires
    fault.

  14. Nonsequitur. If you're a vegetarian, you don't speak French, either.
OK, I'll bite: You're driving along in your Pinto. Suddenly, a Caprice
Classic hits you from behind. Your car catches fire, you're trapped
inside, you burn to death -- all because of your Pinto's design and
construction. How, exactly, is this your fault?

Those Gremlins took a licking and kept on ticking.... yes I know
that's from the old Timex comercials, but as ugly as those Gremlins
    were they were tough.

  17. I bought a Gremlin for $300 in the middle 1980's to use as a beater
during the winter. I drove the crap out of that car for four years
replacing only brakes, ball joints, tires along with normal maintenance.
It performed well to with the 258 six 2 bbl auto.

I've been driving AMC cars for nearly 40 years. Most of the people
who badmouth them have never owned one. Even the much-maligned
Gremlin had its good points over the domestic competition of the
time (rusting Vegas with self-destructing engines and exploding
    Pintos).

Last time I looked, a descendent of the old old AMC/Rambler inline
six which debuted in 1964 is still powering Jeep Wranglers.

If that were the scenario, I say it wasn't the drivers fault. But that
wasn't the scenario. In almost all the alleged fires, the gas cap had be
left off. Almost all cars have / had the gas tank in the back. Only the
ones that were not used properly fried. Just like the ambulance ordeal in
the eighties. All were blamed on the vehicle, when it was actually the
dumass operators taking the gas caps off with the vehicle about 4,000
degrees right after a hot run. They were never below 3/4 tank, (didn't need
fuel anyway) Then the gas spews out, and catches fire.
