New approach to PT Cruiser power steering cooler repair

Discussion in 'PT Cruiser' started by Pete E. Kruzer, Mar 27, 2008.

  1. I previously posted a problem in getting a power steerin cooler
    without an upgrade.
There has to be OE coolers for a 2001 PT Cruiser somewhere that I can
    purchase
and have installed. I see no reason to pay hundreds of additional
    dollars for an
upgrade. I only have 48K on the car. If I could get another 46K
    without the upgrade
    I'd be satisfied.

  2. note below:

why not buy a transmission cooler at the local parts barn and use it?

And we have previously answered your reply. The only upgrade was adding the
hoses (return) to the cooler, If someone is telling you that there is more
labor to install this unit you need to find another person to work on your
    vehicle.

  4. Glenn, Chrysler told me that part of the upgrade was a new resorvoir.

  5. And I forgot, new hoses, and of course a re-designed cooler, are part
    of the upgrade.

All I wanted was an old style OE cooler.

Give me the last 8 numbers of the vin and the part number they want to sell
    you.

  7. Glenn, I don't have the part number, but I can tell you the following:

    VIN 1T503754

Krebs Chrysler / Jeep parts department told me:
    Cooler - $97.75
    Resorvoir - $43.26
    Hose - $36.00
    Labor - $295

The part number is what I would really need. Im just wondering if the
reservoir and Pressure hose are leaking along with the cooler. Is that is
how the price got so high or are they not sure and just selling you
    everything?

  9. They claim they're selling me everything because it's an upgrade from
the parts installed when the car was new in 2001.

Pete I just ran your vin number and yes you are correct they did supersede
the cooler to a new number just recently and it does require installing a
new hose and resorvoir. It does not give us the info on why it was
    changed. The part numbers are.
    5272867ad hose
    5272351aa resorvoir
    5272354ae cooler

  11. Thanks. Don't you think that Chrysler should pay for the hose and
resorvoir when all I need is a cooler?

I half jokingly said to the parts department person, "For $500 I can
add a hell of a lot of power steering fluid. She said, "You could have
a fire from the leaked fulid."
Now this statement indicates to me that it's a safety hazard, the
vehicle is "unsafe." Right now Ford is recalling thousands of F-150
pickups back to 1999 for replacement of cruise control parts. Why?
Because the OE could become defective and CAUSE A FIRE!! And the
owners of the 1999 trucks which are out of warranty aren't paying
    penny one.

I dont know why they were superseded to an updated part.. No I dont think
Chrysler should pay for it. It is something that happens all the time and
not just with cars. I have a Homelite 360 Chain saw that needed bushings to
keep the engine from falling out of the mount and stop the vibration. I was
told they are no longer available and cant find them aftermarket either. I
cant make Homelite buy me a new saw. It happens!! They may have changed
suppliers and the supplier is making it different then the original part.
Just curious, how many miles does your PT have?

I hate getting into conversations like this but think about it, you know
there is a leak, you can have it fixed. If it catches on fire then wouldnt
it be on the owner? If you kept adding fluid and it leaks out on the exhaust
whos fault is it? Transmissions leak fluid, engines leak oil, coolant leaks
as well, you cant say there should be a recall just because of that. Your
lawnmower may be leaking oil and could catch fire.

I would think something like this would be different, it is a hidden problem
    that cannot be seen.

There's a bunch of stuff that Chrysler should be forced to do safety
recalls on but aren't. How about windshield wipers that cut off and
otherwise behave sporadically on LH cars. How about steering racks that
lock up - that's right - lock up while going down the road at 60 mph.
The only thing I can figure is that the auto manufacturers have some
    backdoor control of the NHTSA.

Where else have you tried for a cooler? Surely there ar aftermarket
coolers that will do what you need to do.
