Light bulb question -- Daniel Stern?

Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by Minnie Bannister, Oct 30, 2004.

  1. Yes, it does.
Oh, I can think of lots of reasons!

-Because it's my civic duty as an American
-To renew my bitching license for four years
    -To piss you off
    -To cancel out your vote

I wonder what they would do if my name's already checked off and I prove
I am me? Guess it goes into the provisional pile and becomes critical
only in a tight race - which we never have any of. 8^)

    Dan,

Just out of curiosity, what "US State" does your vote get tallied in? Given
the Presidential Electoral College system, where does your vote get counted?
Is it your last US address?

  4. In my case, Colorado.
Last US residence of voter registration.

  5. Many countries permit expatriates to vote, UK and Germany included. Whether
the people use that vote is another matter. Reasons are many.

  6. I didn't know expat. Brits could vote; maybe I should . . . I guess not:
    I haven't lived there for 40 years.

But even though now also an Australian citizen, I can't vote there
because I no longer have a legal residence there.

I have upgraded the wiring (thanks for the tips on your site DS -
danielsternlighting "dot" com) and realized that the connectors behind
the bulbs are much cooler now, before they were too hot to touch.
Since the light output is significantly better (higher voltage?) why
are the bulbs (or just the connectors) cooler? TIA

  8. Because the small-gauge wires were heating up with the load of the bulbs.

Your vote would have actually counted in Maryland ;-)

yeah, right. I live in PG county, did you look at the breakdown of
voters? something like 80% for Kerry... I could have stayed home and
it would have made no difference whatsoever...

Montgomery for me. Of course the old argument is that if everybody felt the
way you expressed, then everyone would stay home...so no votes at all. It
takes everyone that wants to vote to get out to vote. One vote makes little
difference. It's the collective vote that does make the difference.

Here's an idea, why not tie electoral votes to the number of people who
actually vote, not just population of states? that way if you care
enough to vote your vote counts more than the "vote" of someone who just
stays home 'cause they know their guy is going to win their state
    anyway. just a thought...

Interesting idea. My guess is that no one will do anything with the current
    system though.

:> That makes sense. Why bother though if not residing in the US? Curious.

:Maybe he's trying to make it less painful to return :)

Well I'd much rather live in the US than Toronto or just about
any other very large Canajun city, but that's for a different
thread. :} I've contemplated living in the US illegally, but
    always chickened out.

Why not try to go about it legally?

  16. Because now the heat is being generated in the filament where it
belongs instead of the wiring where it isn't. The bulb is quite a bit
    hotter.

There are [as good as] no legal methods these days besides
marrying an American. Well, that's always a theoretical
    possibility! :}

If you've spent any time in a place like Torunawayfrom, you'd
know why. Not that it's that bad or anything, it's just so
booooring... (I'd take Boston over it any day.) Vancouver is
    Toronto with better scenery.
