Hey Ted: Cheapo cars

Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by Robbie and Laura Reynolds, Nov 16, 2005.

  1. You mentioned cheap cars in the minivan thread. I just wanted to
mention that I put a license plate on my latest auction car yesterday,
the 1996 Neon with 93,000 miles, and I drove it to work this morning. I
have to say that my 1989 Honda Accord is ten times the car that the Neon
is, and it has twice the miles. The Neon is great, it went the full 175
miles around town and got the job done, it runs well and everything
seems to work. But it's like driving a tin can. I haven't driven a car
that felt that cheap since my '82 Nissan Sentra that I had 15 years ago.

Anyway, nothing wrong with it, but it sure gives me a new appreciation
for a well built car. I think I'll pass it along as soon as I get the
title in the mail, and go back and get something else. The funny thing
is that I'll probably make a few hundred bucks on it, as long as the
engine doesn't crap out in the next month.

  2. I'll be disappointed if you spent more than $175 on it. ;-)

What happened to the 89 van that blew a trans?

  3. OK, I'll keep my mouth shut about the price. All I can say is that I
really needed a car that night. But there's always somebody who will
    pay more than I did.

It's still sitting in the driveway. I keep going back and forth between
wanting to get rid of it and wanting to fix it. Cold weather blew in a
    few days ago...

I'm starting to think seriously about getting a rebuilt transmission,
although it will cost more than the van did. It's a good van, and I
think it's worth it. I'm pretty sure it belonged to some old people who
took good care of it. Leather seats, full electric options, not a ton
of miles, everything works. Plus new struts and new brakes. Most
likely, it will probably sit around for a while until I find a good deal
    on a transmission.
