HELP! bad Fuel Smell in engine when cold - '93 Town&Country 3.3L V6 EFI

Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by Gary Jablonski, Dec 16, 2003.

  1. Greetings -- Any help would be appreciated--

    I have a 1993 Chrysler Town and Country mini-van.
It has served me well (sort of) for 140,000 miles.
I get a heavy smell of raw fuel in the engine compartment
when the engine is cold and the outside temperature is
under 40 Degrees F. BUT - the smell goes away when the car
    warms up.

The engine is a 3.3L V6 with EFI. When cold I do NOT notice
any change in driveability (performance is normal) and
the fuel econony has not changed for a long time. I still
get 21.2 MPG city, summer or winter.

Any suggestions. You can reply to this posting or send me
private email. Has anyone else experienced this problem.
What was the solution? Will it be worth the money to take it
to the dealer and have a DRB-II scan?

    Regards and thanks in advance.

P.S. For anyone interested, the '93 has habitual problems with
the ABS pump and actuator. The good news is that that part has
a lifetime factory warranty. Must be a safety issue. I've had
3 replaced so far gratus from dealer. Keep that in mind.
Symptoms are: ABS light comes on (solid or intermittent),
cannot hear the pump running when brakes applied a few times,
and brake pedal is "high and hard". I think the recall # is 685

You have either a leaking fuel hose or a leaking "O" ring on a
injector or a fuel connector. Look for the wet spot when the smell is
the worst. If you can smell it is a fire hazard. The "o" rings only
seal well for about 5 -7 years.

Sounds like a leaky injector. Is it alittle harder to start? If so it would
    indicate a loss of pressure/prime.

  4. My 96 had a recall for a possible leak on the fuel rail. I don't know
if it applied to the 93 model year, but you may want to check on that.

  5. A likely cause is worn (cracked) o-rings on your fuel injectors where
they go into the engine. When cold, they won't seal and you get fuel
vapors coming out; as the engine heats, the o-rings soften and then seal
OK. Better get it fixed, could be dangerous.

    I have a similar problem.
I, too, have the fuel odor that Gary J. mentions.
If I attempt to restart the car after I just turn it off, it starts right
    up.
If I let it sit, It turns over a bit till it starts.

Where (other the the dealer) can I get replacement O-Rings for my injectors?
Will plain Jane, O-Rings from the hardware/autoparts store do?
Anyone know what size they are?
    I have a '85 New Yorker with a 2.2L Turbo.

    TIA

You can get ones *specific* to your application from an auto parts store.
They will be sold as part of an intake gasket set.
