Cruiser remote lock/unlock control

  1. I have to be practically on top ot the vehicle to use it. The remote
for my wife's Alero works from a decent distance away.
Is mine operating the way it should? Should I try a new battery??

    Hi...

I have the same problem. Getting so old that I can lose
my car in the driveway, not to mention a big parking lot.
Think it's a plot, though. Think the car somehow moves
itself to the other end of the lot while I'm in the store :)

I'd love to be able to lock it from a distance, and hear it
chirp at me, but only works when I'm close enough to almost
    touch it.

Tried new batteries on general principle, no difference.

Can anyone tell me what distance is to be expected?

    Thanks, and take care.

a nice aftermarket remote start system will fix all your ills with the
keyless and work at 1000 feet to boot

    Hi...

Changed the subject line for fear I may have inadvertently
    hijacked another thread :(

Actually I already have one of those installed, but don't
use it except for -30 weather to start it while I put on my
coat... don't carry it, it just sits on the top shelf of the
    front door closet.

The problem is... yikes... Manitoba offered a worthwhile discount
on insurance for those folks who had vehicle immobilizers installed.
The fellow that had this car before I got it had the remote starter
installed, but didn't want to tamper with the OEM system for fear
    of invalidating his insurance, so...

What I ended up with was Chrysler's 3 button system... works well,
but doesn't flash the lights with lock/unlock operations. It does
beep the horn when it locks.

And a 4 button starter that does weird things. Remote start/stop
works perfectly. The lock/unlock buttons don't lock or unlock or
chirp the horn; however they do make the park lights flash :)
And it does it from a great distance :)

I don't care much about invalidating insurance - don't too much
worry about theft, but of course need liability, so I'd like to
make the four button do everything, and forget about Chrysler's,
    but it's complex.

If anyone can help, what I see that's different and unusual is...
it will start in gear, the relay's been removed and a jumper
substituted. The relay is good, but removing the jumper and
re-installing the relay won't start either remote or by key.
Don't know if this is a bad switch in the tranny, or related
    to the next paragraph.

The other difference is at the firewall - passenger side - is
a large block of connections. One beige wire has been disconnected
and taped up (engine side), and another wire has been spliced
to the stub going into the cabin.

The original installer of the remote has gone out of business,
    so I can't go there.

Anyone have any real good ideas? :)

    Thanks, and take care.

Try a new battery first. Or your remote could be bad - I know some
early years of 2nd gen LH cars the remotes were defective (very short
range and ate batteries) - solved by replacing the remote - check to see
if there are any TSB's on yours (write down P/N that's on the back of
the remote to check against - the suffix will be in a list of bad ones
if yours is on the list). Even if no TSB listing yours, you might try a
new remote from the dealer in any case - the old one needs to be working
to program the new one (unless you want to pay a programing fee to the
    dealer).

Weird, I'm still using the original battery and transponder for my '99! I
can tell the range has decreased, but not so much that is inconvenient. I
have two spares that work ok as well. I know they changed the transmitter
models over the years, mine are marked TRW, who I believe exited that
    business.

Good news is the transponders are fairly inexpensive. If the PT is like the
LH, then you just need to have one working transmitter that is already
programmed. Once you have that, you can program any number of transponders
up to the system maximum (8?). You need to use all transponders whenever
you're programming, they will be deleted otherwise.
