The darkening area of my auto day/night mirror is fading in size. Is
replacing the entire mirror the only option?

2002 Stratus R/T Sunroof. This is a windshield mounted mirror.

    TIA

Yes that would be the only option

You could get an after market replacement with out the day/night.

and when you find out how much that day/night mirror is you may want
    to do just that.

I would need your VIN# in order to be sure of wich but they run from
    $150 to $200

If I had to guess I would say it is sorta like a liquid crystal display that
developed a leak. The Mini vans use an electrochromic material between 2
pieces of glass with photocell sensors that monitor the light and adjust the
    glare. My opinion only

I was interested to read this thread today because last night during a long
drive (5+ hours) I noticed that lights in my rearview mirror (99 Intrepid w/ the
auto dim mirror) seemed brighter than they used to be. I turned the mirror on
and off a few times. Unforunately the auto dim takes a little while to turn on
/off so you can't get a quick comparison. In the end I decided it was working
but maybe not as effectively as before.

Then again, more people seem to be driving these days with high beams on,
searchlight-fog lights, lights aimed too high etc. But maybe that's just me or
    my eyes.

I recall that the auto dim feature gave lights a slight greenish tint and I
didn't see that last night though. I just checked my [Added Care] service
contract (1 month left!) and it doesn't appear to be listed. The only mirror
    item was electric mirror motors/controls.
