My five year full service extended warranty expired last week on my '99
Grand Caravan ES. Today the air bag light went on and I lost my horn. I have
    a dealer appointment for 06/05.

Any idea what would have caused this?

This is covered by a recall concerning a part in the steering assembly.

The recall may not cover 99's. The part is the clockspring and maintains
the electrical connection to steering wheel systems while it's turning.
When it goes, you have no air bag, no horn and no cruise control (and
whatever other system has controls on the steering wheel).

The recall only applied if you had less than a certain number of miles,
60,000 comes to mind, but I can't remember for sure. I had my
clockspring replaced at around 100,000 miles and it wasn't covered.

For those covered by the recall, the clockspring is covered for the life of
the vehicle. Under... I think it's 70,000 miles... you just bring your van
in and they'll replace the clockspring. Over 70,000 miles, don't bring it
in unless it fails. Either way, it's covered. My uncertainty is the model
years covered. I know mine was and it's a '96.

If Chrysler does not cover it be sure to file a defect report with the
federal agency in charge of auto safety. This is how the earlier recall got
    started.

Thanks all for your response. Yes, it is the clockspring that is shot. The
1999's were not subject to recall per my dealer (only 96's to 98's.) I guess
I have to hold on to my wallet when I bring it in on June 5th. Its tough
driving without a horn and that air bag light on and off. Gotta get it fixed
as I think I am ready for another car soon.

Unless you're going to reiterate that the clock spring is defective as
he's already been told by several people, then what you would have to
    tell him is wrong.

Sorry - I fed the troll.

It should cost around $200 to repair. Mine went out on my '96 T&C LXi before
the recall and I paid less than $190 to have it replaced. After I received the
recall notice I sent Chrysler the documentation on the repair and they sent me
a check for full reimbursement. If you are interested in finding out if there
are any unperformed or incomplete recalls or customer satisfaction
notifications on your vehicle go to www.chrysler.com, click on "For Owners" on
the top menu, enter the last 8 characters from your Vehicle Identification
Number (VIN) and click go. If anything comes back, print the page (for your
proof) and go to your dealer service department and ask them to do the same
thing - then have them take care of it.
