Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by Random Electron, Jul 27, 2004.

  1. Hi,

I am looking for information regardind transmission shudder under light
    acceleration.

    1. Is there a secret warranty covering this?
    2. Where is the best place to get this serviced? (dealer/independant)
    3. What is involved in the service?
    4. What should the service cost?

First thing is to get the AT fluid changed with Chrysler fluid and NO
additives at your Chrysler dealer. ATF + 3 or +4 are the right Chrysler
    fluids. Remember no additives.

My 94' did this too. I never fixed it during the 75k miles I had it. I
lessened the problem by changing the xmission fluid every 20k and adding a
"no shudder" additive that was sold by Lube Guard. It worked for about the
first 5 - 7k miles but I think that the additive wears out after a period of
time and the shudder would come back. Mine was only noticeable on a slight
uphill grade like we have around Pittsburgh, Pa. Also, anytime you
downshift it would go away above 3k engine rpms. It was really only
noticeable at around 1.5k - 2k under a light load. I did try changing the
plugs and wires to solve it but that didn't make any difference either.
It's hard to tell sometimes if it's a miss or what. I read recently that
the sensors for the knocking mechanisms do go bad after a period of time. I
have a hard time believing that as they are just a simple microphone method
with a Piezo element but it is a possibility. If I would have had mine
still I would have tried changing it to see if that was the case. Maybe you
could try the wires and plugs, r/r the fluid (use either ATF III + or IV + )
and add the Lube Guard No shutter additive and then also change the knock
sensor. That would cover all the bases.

There may also be a software patch for your AT. I would not recommend any
additive as suggested by another poster.

There is definitely a new version of the software for a 94 (several,
most likely), assuming its never been updated before.
