'87 jeep brake problem

Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by RANDALL HAMILTON, Aug 8, 2005.

  1. I did a front brake job on my 1987 jeep Cherokee and now I can't get any
fluid to my passenger side caliper. What the heck is happening?

It sounds like you did something wrong.

The hydraulic brake fluid is not touched when you do the front brake pads.
It is only after they are replaced that you then bleed the fluid. Although
you don't say much, it sounds like you removed the caliper and allowed air
into the system so now it will have to be bled properly ... if this is the
case, then follow the procedure for removing and replacing a caliper. If
this is not the case, then you will need to share what you did before anyone
    can be of much help.

  3. I should have gone into more detail. I replaced the master cylinder both
calipers, rotors and pads. I didn't do the rear as the shoes had about 70%
left. Before I started I flushed the system with new fluid. After the new
gear was installed I ran into this problem. It's been suggested that the
proportioning valve might be the problem but I don't know how to check it
out and can't see any way to adjust it. Any suggestions? I hate to just
start replacing parts at random. Thanks

you may need to put a scaner on it and go to abs brakes and do the brake
bleed proceedure. i had the same problem an a newer one

  5. Problem found, a piece of the old master cylinder found it's way into the
proportioning valve and was blocking the line. Of course I started
disassembling from the calipers and worked my way almost to the new master
before I found it. It's funny this didn't happen when I flushed the system
before I decided to replace the master. Any chance that the problem was with
the new unit even after bench bleeding it? In any case a big THANK YOU to
    everyone for the help.RLH
