2000 Chrysler T+C: Tranny problem?

Vehicle is a 2000 Chrysler T+C LX 3.3L V6 with the extra transmission
cooler. It now has 72000 miles on it. It was driving just fine up
until my wife drove it a couple days ago (I drive it to work everyday).
According to her (she's now stuck 600 miles away at her sister's
house), when you put the transmission into gear and hit the gas, it revs
up but you don't get much movement. Then it will lurch and move. She
also says it's making a whining noise. Van will go down the road, but
seems to go in and out of gear, like it's going into neutral. Van is
now at the shop for repair. I checked the transmission fluid before she
left and it was clean and filled to the correct level. No prior service
work has been performed on this transmission (still original fluid).

My question is, is this a "simple" fix, like the brain going bonkers, or
solenoids that need replacing, or should I get ready for the $1,500
    repair bill for a replacement/rebuild?

Had similar problem with 95 stratus. Replacing the solenoid pack was the
answer. Much less $$ than a rebuild. Make sure the person doing the repair
knows how to read and interpret the transmission codes. Run away from anyone
who says "it has to come out".

    Good luck.
